Application Description

Digital Revolution of Devarattam

This application was developed as part of my initiative "Digital Revolution of Devarattam". The project honors three esteemed recipients of national arts awards - Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kumararaman (retired teacher), Kalaimani Mr. M. Kannan Kumar, and Kalaimani Mr. K. Nellai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti who were honored with the Kalaimamani, Kalaimani, and Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awards respectively for their contributions to Devarattam.

I dedicate this application to these three legendary figures, my Guru Mr. E. Rajakamulu, and all the beloved veterans of Devarattam. My primary objective in creating this Devarattam app is to promote awareness about this traditional art form and particularly highlight its award-winning practitioners.

About Devarattam

Devarattam is a traditional folk dance originating from Tamil Nadu. Historically performed by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community, this dance form continues to be practiced today. The dance repertoire consists of 32 to 72 distinct steps, with 32 forming the fundamental movements while the remaining are variations and elaborations of these basic steps.

Performers of Devarattam typically hold a kerchief in each hand and wear Salangai (ankle bells) on their legs. The dance is accompanied by the rhythmic beats of a traditional percussion instrument known as the Deva Thunthumi, creating a vibrant spectacle of movement and sound.
