WoW Season of Discovery Revives 2005 Bug

Summary

  • The infamous Corrupted Blood Incident from World of Warcraft has unexpectedly reappeared in Season of Discovery.
  • The Zul'Gurub raid, reintroduced in Phase 5 of Season of Discovery, brought back the Corrupted Blood spell, causing chaos once again.
  • Players have recreated the Corrupted Blood Incident by spreading the deadly plague in Stormwind City, echoing the events of 2005.

The Corrupted Blood Incident, one of the most memorable events in World of Warcraft history, has inadvertently made a comeback in the Season of Discovery realms. As players circulated video evidence of the deadly plague spreading through cities, reactions ranged from amusement to concern, particularly about its potential impact on Hardcore realms.

Originally introduced with Patch 1.7, Rise of the Blood God, in September 2005, the Zul'Gurub raid was a 20-player instance where players battled Hakkar the Soulflayer, a feared deity of the Gurubashi trolls. Zul'Gurub made a return in World of Warcraft: Season of Discovery during Phase 5, launched in September 2024. Hakkar's Corrupted Blood spell, which inflicts damage over time and spreads to nearby players, was manageable under normal raid conditions with robust healing from classes like Priests or Paladins.

However, for nearly a month following the release of Zul'Gurub, Corrupted Blood could affect both players and certain pets and minions, leading to its spread beyond the raid and wreaking havoc across World of Warcraft. A video shared by user Lightstruckx on the r/classicwow subreddit captured the Corrupted Blood debuff in action within Stormwind City's Trade District. Lightstruckx used Priest spells such as Flash Heal and Power Word: Shield to survive as the debuff quickly felled other players, mirroring the chaos of the original 2005 incident where "pet bombs" were used to spread the plague.

World of Warcraft Players Accidentally Re-Create The Corrupted Blood Incident

Some World of Warcraft players believe that the reappearance of the Corrupted Blood debuff in Season of Discovery is a lingering issue that Blizzard has yet to resolve. Others are worried about its potential misuse in Hardcore realms, where permanent death is a core feature, forcing players to start anew if their characters die.

Despite previous attempts to address the issue in World of Warcraft, the legacy of the Corrupted Blood Incident persists. With the seventh phase of Season of Discovery scheduled for early 2025, it remains uncertain when Blizzard will fully resolve the latest outbreak of Corrupted Blood.
