GeoGuessr Responds to Feedback Amid Steam Rating Plunge

May 19,2025 Author: Blake

The eagerly anticipated GeoGuessr Steam Edition, released on May 8, has quickly become the second-worst rated game of all time on Steam. Despite the overwhelming success of the browser version of GeoGuessr, which has attracted 85 million players and offers extensive customization options, the Steam version has received a significant backlash.

Of the over 3,000 user reviews since its launch, a staggering 84% are negative. Players have expressed frustration over the game's monetization system and the lack of gameplay options compared to the browser edition. Key issues include the inability to unlink accounts or log out once connected to Steam, the absence of solo practice modes, and the presence of bots in the free amateur mode. Additionally, paid features from the browser version do not carry over to Steam, a point that GeoGuessr clarifies in its FAQs.

GeoGuessr explains that the Steam Edition is an early access title, allowing them to refine gameplay and introduce new features based on player feedback. The game's monetization model, which requires a $30 upfront payment for a year-long Steam Pass, has caught many players off guard. The free-to-play version offers limited content, featuring only the Duels mode in the Amateur Division.

While the browser version also requires a subscription for full access, with tiers ranging from $2.49 to $4.99 monthly, only the higher tiers include free access to the Steam game. GeoGuessr's head of marketing, Tomas Jonson, emphasized the significance of the Steam launch and the company's commitment to improving both the free and paid experiences. He acknowledged the community's feedback on monetization, noting that the ongoing costs of Google Street View data influenced their model.

Looking ahead, GeoGuessr plans to keep the Steam Edition in early access for at least six months, with intentions to introduce new modes, maps, and competitive features. They value the high engagement and feedback from players, aiming to collaborate closely with the community as they develop the game further.
