AMD's Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT: A March 2025 Launch
AMD unveiled its next-generation graphics cards, the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT, at CES 2025. However, these RDNA 4 GPUs were notably absent from AMD's main presentation, despite being showcased by vendors on the show floor with limited specifications.
David McAfee, VP & GM of Radeon Graphics and Ryzen CPUs, subsequently announced a March 2025 release date via Twitter/X. He stated that the "Radeon 9000 series hardware and software are looking great," promising a broad global availability.
While a March launch is confirmed, AMD remains tight-lipped on specifics like pricing and detailed specifications. Industry speculation suggests the RX 9070 series will compete directly with Nvidia's RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti, launching in February, in terms of price and performance.
Interestingly, reports indicate that RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT cards have already reached retailers and reviewers, with eTeknix confirming receipt of review samples. This pre-release distribution has fueled speculation that AMD delayed the official launch to strategically counter Nvidia's February releases, enabling a direct comparison of the competing GPUs. Another theory points to pricing pressure from Nvidia as a contributing factor to the delay.
The launch messaging surrounding the AMD RX 9070 series has been less than clear. A June 2024 report highlighted Nvidia's dominant 88% share of the discrete GPU market, leaving AMD with only 12%. Facing a lack of significant competition in the mid-range and high-end segments, AMD needs a strong showing to make inroads into Nvidia's market share.
