It's official: Shang-Chi is making a triumphant return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During the massive Avengers: Doomsday livestream, it was revealed that Simu Liu, who first captivated audiences as Shang-Chi in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in 2021, will be back for the eagerly anticipated ensemble film. However, due to Marvel Studios' notorious secrecy around potential spoilers, Liu remained tight-lipped about his involvement until his name appeared alongside other MCU luminaries.
Last month's cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday spotlighted several veteran X-Men actors, signaling a major role for the X-Men in the film. Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden are all set to join the fray. Grammer, who portrayed Beast in the Fox X-Men franchise, made his MCU debut in The Marvels' post-credits scene. Patrick Stewart, known for his role as Charles Xavier/Professor X in the X-Men films, had a brief appearance in the MCU with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as a member of the Illuminati. Meanwhile, McKellen (Magneto), Cumming (Nightcrawler), Romijn (Mystique), and Marsden (Cyclops) are yet to make their MCU debuts. This begs the question: could Avengers: Doomsday secretly be an Avengers vs. X-Men movie?
"I knew I was going to be involved in it to some capacity," Liu shared during a recent appearance on the Jennifer Hudson Show. "But I didn't know who else they were announcing. They don't tell us anything. Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo ruined it for all of us. Now, they don't tell us." Liu's comments refer to the well-known leaks from Holland about the MCU’s Spider-Man series and Ruffalo's tendency to spill plot points about the Avengers. Since those incidents, Marvel has tightened its grip on spoilers, ensuring that all cast members remain in the dark until necessary.
Liu, who also featured as one of the Kens in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, was astounded to see the caliber of actors set to join him in Avengers: Doomsday. "I saw when Sir Ian and Sir Patrick were announced," he remarked during the interview. "These are two of the greatest actors to have ever walked the face of the Earth. That blew my mind a little bit."
The excitement around Avengers: Doomsday is palpable, yet much about the film remains shrouded in mystery. Set for release on May 1, 2026, fans are eager to uncover more details in the coming year, spoilers or otherwise.
Meanwhile, MCU fans have also been buzzing about Robert Downey Jr.'s recent Doctor Doom-themed invitation for his 60th birthday party, adding yet another layer of intrigue to the unfolding MCU narrative.
