Today, Bethesda has won the hearts of The Elder Scrolls community by gifting free game keys for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered to the entire team behind the popular mod, Skyblivion. This generous gesture was shared with fans through a heartfelt post on BlueSky, where the Skyblivion team expressed their gratitude, stating, "As massive fans, we're beyond grateful for the generous gift of Oblivion Remastered game keys for our entire modding team! This means so much to us. Thank you for everything, Bethesda!"
Skyblivion is an ambitious fan-made project by the TESRenewal volunteer modding group, aiming to remake The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion using Bethesda's Creation Engine within the setting of its sequel, Skyrim. What began as a simple port has evolved over the past decade into a full-fledged remake, promising enhanced features and additional content. We had the opportunity to speak with one of the developers back in 2021, and anticipation continues to build as Skyblivion is slated for release this year.
The relationship between Bethesda and the Skyblivion team has been characterized by mutual respect and support. Recent rumors suggested that Bethesda might be attempting to preempt the mod with an official remaster, given the close timing of their releases. However, the Skyblivion team has clarified their stance, emphasizing that Bethesda has always supported community projects like theirs and there's no need for any sense of competition between the two.
It's worth noting that Oblivion Remastered does not officially support mods, yet the modding community has already begun creating unofficial mods shortly after its launch. Both versions of Oblivion offer distinct experiences: Skyblivion is exclusive to PC and includes new and revamped content, while Oblivion Remastered is available across multiple platforms, includes the horse armor DLC for Deluxe Edition buyers, and offers a different visual and gameplay experience. Fans eager to dive into Oblivion Remastered can do so immediately, while those awaiting Skyblivion must exercise a bit more patience.
In the meantime, delve into why some players consider today’s release more of a remake than a remaster and explore Bethesda's reasoning behind labeling it as "Remastered."
