Terminally Ill Gamer's Wish to Play Borderlands 4 Early
Gearbox CEO Responds to Fan's Plea
Caleb McAlpine, a 37-year-old Borderlands enthusiast battling terminal cancer, made an emotional appeal on Reddit, expressing his desire to experience Borderlands 4 before his passing. Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in August, Caleb shared his passion for the series and his hope to play the anticipated 2025 release.
McAlpine's heartfelt request didn't go unnoticed. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford responded on Twitter (X), promising to explore all options to fulfill Caleb's wish. Pitchford confirmed they've been in email contact, working towards a solution.
Borderlands 4 was revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024, with a projected 2025 release. However, this timeframe presents a challenge for McAlpine, whose prognosis, as detailed on his GoFundMe page, is 7-12 months, possibly extending to two years with successful treatment.
Despite his circumstances, McAlpine maintains a positive outlook, drawing strength from his faith. His GoFundMe campaign, aiming to cover medical expenses, has garnered significant support.
Gearbox's History of Supporting Fans
This act of compassion isn't unprecedented for Gearbox. In 2019, they provided an early copy of Borderlands 3 to Trevor Eastman, another fan battling cancer. Sadly, Eastman passed away later that year, but his memory lives on through the "Trevonator" legendary weapon named in his honor.
In 2011, Gearbox paid tribute to deceased fan Michael Mamaril by including an NPC named after him in Borderlands 2, a gesture that deeply touched his friend and the community.
While Borderlands 4's release date remains distant, Gearbox's commitment to fulfilling McAlpine's wish underscores their dedication to their fans. Pitchford's statement emphasizes Gearbox's ambitious vision for Borderlands 4, promising improvements and exciting new directions. Further details are eagerly awaited by fans. In the meantime, players can wishlist Borderlands 4 on Steam.
