The 1954 Crime SuspenStories #22 remains one of the most notorious horror comics ever published. Its chilling cover, depicting a man with an ax and his wife’s severed head, is instantly recognizable. This iconic image sparked a fierce anti-comics movement in the 1950s, leading to the Comics Code Authority and the eventual collapse of EC Comics.
Now, EC Comics has risen again as an Oni Press imprint. Its latest release honors Johnny Craig’s infamous cover art. IGN exclusively unveils artist Jay Stephens’ cover for Catacomb of Torment #1, part of a series celebrating classic EC tributes. See it below:

This horror anthology showcases work by John Arcudi, Marguerite Bennett, Dan McDaid, Matt Kindt, David Lapham, and Tonči Zonjić. Alongside it, Corinna Bechko and Andrea Sorrentino’s Blood Type and J. Holtham, Kano, Ann Nocenti, David Rubín, and Greg Smallwood’s Cruel Universe 2 will also debut.
“Our EC Comics line is not only Oni’s top-selling series in nearly 30 years, but it’s also a thrilling project to create,” said Oni Press President and Publisher Hunter Gorinson. “After surpassing our goals with Epitaphs From the Abyss, Cruel Universe, and Cruel Kingdom, we’re pushing boundaries with bolder, bloodier stories in EC’s second year.”
“Working on EC Comics has been a deeply inspiring experience for everyone involved, from Oni’s team to our creative partners,” said Oni Press Editor in Chief Sierra Hahn. “Bringing these gripping morality tales to life with top storytellers is a true delight. This summer’s lineup continues that tradition.”
