In 2024, the cinematic world witnessed the release of a highly controversial film directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola—Megalopolis. Premiering at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, this ambitious and unconventional epic quickly became a focal point of both admiration and critique throughout the year. Now, Coppola is set to reintroduce this tale through an entirely different medium: a graphic novel.
Titled Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis: An Original Graphic Novel, the book is scheduled for release in October via Abrams ComicArts, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The project will be led by renowned adapter Chris Ryall, known for his work adapting notable authors such as Stephen King, Harlan Ellison, and Clive Barker. The illustrations will be crafted by Jacob Phillips, whose portfolio includes Newburn and That Texas Blood.
"I am delighted to entrust the concept of a graphic novel to the capable hands of Chris Ryall, encouraging the creative freedom that it needn't strictly adhere to the original film," Coppola stated. "My hope is that this graphic novel takes its own journey, with its unique artists and writer, becoming a companion piece to the film rather than merely echoing it."
Coppola expressed his belief that this adaptation aligns with his vision of art transcending boundaries, stating, "This is precisely what Chris, Jacob Phillips, and the team at Abrams ComicArts have achieved. It reinforces my belief that art should always evolve freely, offering diverse expressions accessible to our audience."
Set against the backdrop of a Roman-inspired fable, Megalopolis follows a visionary architect (played by Adam Driver) determined to construct a modern utopia. However, his aspirations clash with the ambitions of the city’s mayor (portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito), who seeks to quash the architect's efforts to transform New Rome into Megalopolis.
Currently unavailable for streaming, the film remains accessible for rental or purchase on popular platforms.
