Dragon Age Writer Leaves BioWare

Feb 11,2025 Author: Lucas

Reports indicate that Corinne Busche, the director of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, is departing from BioWare, an EA subsidiary. Eurogamer reported her departure, expected within the coming weeks, following her tenure as game director from February 2022 until the game's launch last year. EA has yet to provide an official statement.

The commercial success of Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been a subject of speculation since its October release. While Eurogamer suggests Busche's departure is unrelated to the game's performance, EA's Q3 2025 financial results (February 4th) will offer further clarity on sales figures. Notably, BioWare has confirmed there are no plans for DLC for The Veilguard, shifting focus to Mass Effect 5.

Busche's career at BioWare, beginning in 2019 after her contributions to The Sims franchise at Maxis, played a significant role in navigating The Veilguard's complex development. This development, detailed in IGN's article "How BioWare Finally Got Dragon Age to the Finish Line After a Tumultuous Decade," involved a significant overhaul from a planned multiplayer game to a single-player RPG.

The news follows previous internal restructuring at EA, including a reported split into sports and non-sports divisions, and a wave of layoffs at BioWare in August 2023, affecting approximately 50 employees, including veteran narrative designer Mary Kirby. Furthermore, Star Wars: The Old Republic transitioned to a third-party publisher, ostensibly to allow BioWare to concentrate on its Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises.

The initial reveal of Dragon Age: The Veilguard (previously titled Dreadwolf) in 2024 faced negative fan reaction, prompting a swift release of gameplay footage. While initial reception was mixed, later impressions proved generally positive. The future of the Dragon Age franchise, and whether BioWare will be given the opportunity to develop a sequel to The Veilguard, remains uncertain.
