One of the most exciting aspects of Elden Ring has always been the variety of playstyles it offers, and if you're like me, you enjoy harnessing the power of Strength to wield massive weapons and dominate enemies with devastating jumping attacks and charged heavy strikes. If this resonates with you, then you'll love meeting the Raider class in Nightreign (check out the video below).
While the Guardian, another robust class with high health and a preference for large weapons, focuses on defense with a shield as its initial weapon and an ultimate ability that shields the entire party for a prolonged period, the Raider is crafted as an unrelenting offensive juggernaut.
The cornerstone of the Raider's arsenal is the Retaliate ability, which might seem modest at first glance—just two stomps that inflict some physical and poise damage. However, the true strength lies in the Raider's passive ability, which prevents knockback during Retaliate. This allows the Raider to absorb damage from nearly any attack, effectively turning it into a free damage-soaking maneuver. Additionally, if the Raider absorbs a significant hit, the second stomp transforms into a potent punch capable of staggering even the mightiest foes.
Then there's the Raider's ultimate, Totem Stela, where the ground is slammed, causing a massive totem to burst forth, dealing substantial damage to surrounding enemies. As with all ultimates in Nightreign, this move is a game-changer. Beyond its damaging effect, the totem can be climbed, providing a safe haven or strategic vantage point for you and your team. Moreover, it boosts everyone's damage, making it a crucial ability to coordinate with your team for maximum impact.
Of all the classes in Nightreign, the Raider has been the most enjoyable for me. Starting with the Raider's Greataxe, a solid weapon that inflicts fire damage and comes equipped with the "Endure" skill—another tool for absorbing and powering through enemy attacks—it sets the stage for a thrilling playstyle. As you progress, seeking out larger strength-scaling weapons becomes essential, perfectly aligning with the Raider's offensive focus.
The Raider truly excels in one-on-one combat, fitting well with its Remembrances, which involve engaging in solo boss battles within a gladiatorial arena—a refreshing twist in gameplay.
That wraps up our hands-on impressions of Nightreign's classes. Keep an eye out throughout the month for detailed looks at Nightreign's mechanics, developer interviews, and more as IGN First continues.
