Rumors of an Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remake, slated for a 2025 release, have surfaced online, accompanied by purported details.
Gaming news outlet Mp1st reported that a former Virtuos employee inadvertently leaked information about the unannounced title. Microsoft declined to comment when contacted by IGN.
According to Mp1st, Virtuos, utilizing Unreal Engine 5, has undertaken a substantial remake, not merely a remaster, of Bethesda's acclaimed RPG. The leak allegedly details gameplay modifications, including adjustments to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reactions, and the HUD.
Mp1st's report claims the Blocking system has been overhauled, drawing inspiration from action and Soulslike games to address criticisms of its original "boring" and "frustrating" mechanics. Sneak icons are reportedly enhanced, damage calculations refined, and Stamina depletion-induced knockdowns made less frequent. The HUD has undergone a redesign for improved clarity. Hit reactions have been implemented for better feedback, and Archery has received a modernization across both first and third-person perspectives.
An Oblivion remaster was first hinted at in 2023, when documents from the FTC vs. Microsoft trial revealed several unannounced Bethesda projects. A July 2020 list, compiled before Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax Media, included:
Fiscal Year 2022:
Fiscal Year 2023:
Fiscal Year 2024:
Many of these titles faced delays or cancellation. Doom Year Zero is now Doom: The Dark Ages, launching this year. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle arrived in December 2024, and The Elder Scrolls VI significantly missed its projected release window.
The Oblivion remake, initially listed as a remaster, is now the focus. The project's scope may have expanded, leading to a full-fledged remake. Official confirmation is eagerly awaited.
Regarding platform availability, Microsoft's current multi-platform strategy suggests a wider release than just PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. With the Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, an Oblivion release on this console is a possibility.
Leakers suggest a June release date for the Oblivion remake, potentially coinciding with the rumored Switch 2 unveiling.
Microsoft's upcoming Xbox Developer Direct will feature id Software's Doom: The Dark Ages reveal. While a new game from an undisclosed Japanese developer is also teased, it's unlikely to be Oblivion.
