Final Fantasy IX Celebrates 25th Anniversary
Picture Book Now Available on Amazon Japan and Rakuten for 1,320 Yen
Final Fantasy IX, originally launched on July 7, 2000, continues its 25th-anniversary festivities with the release of a new illustrated prequel titled "Vivi and Grandpa: On the Day of Departure." Crafted by Event Designer Kazuhiko Aoki and Character Designer Toshiyuki Itahana, this 44-page picture book delves into the emotional backstory of Black Mage Vivi and his adoptive grandfather, Quan, set just before Vivi’s journey to the Kingdom of Alexandria begins.
This marks the second Final Fantasy-themed picture book collaboration from Aoki and Itahana, following their 2021 release "Chocobo and the Airship," which later received a global physical edition in 2023. "Vivi and Grandpa: On the Day of Departure" is now available in both digital and physical formats on Amazon Japan and Rakuten for 1,320 yen (approximately $9 USD).
Alongside the picture book, Square Enix has rolled out an expansive lineup of Final Fantasy IX merchandise. While some items are currently Japan-exclusive, fans worldwide can purchase collectible plush toys, apparel including replicas of Vivi’s iconic hat, and a special vinyl album featuring both original and newly recorded tracks through the official Square Enix Store. These products are also available at the Square Enix pop-up store in Osaka, with a second location set to open in Tokyo on July 25, 2025.

Despite rising fan speculation, there has been no official confirmation of a Final Fantasy IX remaster or remake. Square Enix’s current focus remains on commemorative merchandise and musical releases, including a newly arranged vinyl album with re-recorded tracks from the original soundtrack. While no remake is on the horizon, the continued celebration of the game’s legacy keeps hope alive for future projects.
