Exciting news for fans of Final Fantasy XIV: a mobile version of the beloved MMORPG may soon be on the horizon, thanks to a collaboration between Square Enix and Tencent. According to a recent report by Niko Partners, a respected video game market research firm, China's National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) has approved 15 video games for import and domestic publication. Among these titles is a mobile adaptation of Square Enix's hit game, Final Fantasy XIV, which Tencent is reportedly developing. This lineup also includes other high-profile games such as a mobile and PC version of Rainbow Six, two Marvel-based games (Marvel Snap and Marvel Rivals), and a mobile game inspired by Dynasty Warriors 8.
Although whispers of Tencent working on a Final Fantasy XIV mobile game circulated last month, neither Tencent nor Square Enix have officially confirmed these efforts. Daniel Ahmad from Niko Partners took to Twitter (X) on August 3 to share that the mobile version is "expected to be a standalone MMORPG separate from the PC game." However, he noted that this information stems from "mostly industry chatter" and should be taken with a grain of salt until officially verified.
Tencent's significant influence in the mobile gaming industry makes this potential partnership with Square Enix a notable development. It aligns with Square Enix's recent declaration in May to aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy for their flagship titles, including the Final Fantasy series. This move signals their intent to expand the reach of their iconic games to diverse gaming platforms.
