Guillermo del Toro's lifelong fascination with Frankenstein is almost as legendary as the monster itself. A recent Netflix preview showcased a first glimpse of his highly anticipated adaptation, with a first-look image of Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein. While a trailer won't be released until summer, del Toro shared a personal message, revealing his decades-long dedication to the project.
"This film has been a dream of mine since childhood—for 50 years," del Toro stated in a video message, as reported by Variety. "I've pursued this for 20 to 25 years. Some might even say I'm a little obsessed with Frankenstein." He gestured to his extensive collection of Frankenstein memorabilia in his Bleak House, underscoring his profound connection to the material.
Del Toro also offered a sneak peek at exclusive footage, featuring Isaac's Victor Frankenstein confronting Mia Goth's aristocratic character and showcasing Jacob Elordi's portrayal of the monster—described as having long black hair, stitched gray skin, and piercing red eyes. This footage remains unavailable online.
"Over the decades, the character has fused with my soul, becoming an autobiography," del Toro explained. "It doesn't get more personal than this."
Del Toro's commitment to bringing this adaptation to life is undeniable. The lengthy development process of Netflix's Frankenstein is a testament to his unwavering passion for the story.
