The long-running GTA 6 mapping project has shifted into high gear following the release of Trailer 2, with one of its key members telling IGN that "it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year." The excitement within the GTA 6 Mapping Discord is palpable as the community, which now boasts 370 members and is on the brink of reaching 400, begins to dissect Trailer 2 and the wealth of new details it offers.
"It's an information overload - it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year," Garza, who oversees the Discord server, shared with IGN. "We have so much new content to work on and we’re really just getting started."
The GTA 6 Mapping Discord emerged in the wake of the massive September 2022 leaks, which some fans speculate were cheekily referenced by Rockstar at the beginning of Trailer 2. The project's mission is to construct the most accurate GTA 6 map possible, a task that until now relied on those leaks and December 2023's Trailer 1. However, the latest map version, v0.049, released by project lead DuPz0r at the end of March, has been rendered outdated by the flood of information from Trailer 2, promising a more detailed and precise map soon.
In addition to confirming plot details and characters, Rockstar released 70 new GTA 6 screenshots and unveiled information and images of explorable locations in Leonida, the game's fictional version of Florida. Confirmed locations from this week's reveal include Vice City (GTA 6's take on Miami), the tropical Leonida Keys archipelago, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga, a national landmark along the state's northern border.
The volunteers are meticulously analyzing Trailer 2 to pinpoint the exact locations of everything shown, matching fictional spaces to their real-world inspirations to refine the GTA 6 map further. Once completed, DuPz0r will release an updated map, offering fans an unprecedented glimpse into what to expect from GTA 6 upon its May 2026 release.
Should Rockstar release additional GTA 6 assets or gameplay footage before then, the mapping team is prepared to update their work. The true test of their accuracy will come only when GTA 6 launches, allowing them to compare their fan-made map with the actual game world.

However, the looming threat of legal action from Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, hangs over the project. A modder who created a playable version of the GTA 6 map in GTA 5 was forced to stop after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two in March. When asked last year about his concerns, Garza admitted to having "some mild concern."
"This project has been going on for quite some time with no direct disruption to our community," Garza explained. "However, I always keep it into consideration if they intend on communicating with us in the future for any reason. We do not explicitly showcase leaked material in the map, so I do not believe they would take that down in particular. I believe they are aware that this project gathers popularity and interest in the game, since everyone wants to see how the world may look like. This can be one of the reasons why they haven’t done anything, since it’s not too negative. If I were ever in the situation of receiving a cease and desist though, then I would respectfully cease and desist. As we get closer to a precise map, it may be possible to receive that notice in the future."
As the community awaits further developments, there's no shortage of content to explore, including all the details we’ve discovered so far and all the GTA 6 fan theories emerging from Trailer 2 itself.
