The Gigabyte M6880X is a wired optical mouse, powered by a standard USB 2.0 connection (5V at 0.5A), making the incident even more perplexing. Images shared by the user show the mouse's top rear panel completely melted, while the underside remained relatively undamaged. The desk and mousepad also sustained melt damage.
Gigabyte officially responded to the incident, acknowledging the user's claim and launching an investigation. They stated their commitment to customer safety and promised to fully investigate the matter, offering support to u/lommelinn.
In a later post, u/lommelinn expressed their disbelief, emphasizing that their PC was in sleep mode at the time and that subsequent voltage checks on the USB port revealed no issues. The cause of the mouse's spontaneous combustion remains a mystery.
