James Gunn recently provided an update on the DCU during a presentation to reporters, revealing that he's already scripting his next directorial project following Superman. Despite not disclosing the specific film, Gunn's busy schedule suggests that we won't hear any announcements until after Superman premieres in July. This has sparked speculation about which DCU projects might best suit his distinctive style and contribute to the expanding universe he's crafting with Peter Safran.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold is generating significant buzz despite the character's frequent appearances on screen. This reboot aims to introduce the DCU's new version of Batman, with a focus on the broader Bat-family and the introduction of Bruce Wayne's son, Damian. While progress on the film has been slow, and the director's role is uncertain, Gunn's knack for emotional father-son stories could be a perfect fit for this project, especially if he steps in to direct.
The Flash is essential to any shared DC Universe, often central to multiverse stories and a key member of the Justice League. Despite the recent box office disappointment of the previous Flash movie, a fresh approach that focuses on Barry Allen or Wally West, rather than overshadowing with Batman, could rejuvenate the character. Gunn's flair for dynamic action and character depth could make a new Flash film a compelling addition to the DCU.
Gunn has expressed challenges in developing The Authority, noting the difficulty in distinguishing it from similar projects like The Boys. Despite its importance to the expanding DCU, the film remains on the back burner. However, Gunn's ability to handle misfit heroes and team dynamics could make The Authority a unique and engaging addition to the franchise.
The planned Waller series has faced setbacks, but transforming it into a feature film could be a smart move. With Waller and ARGUS playing pivotal roles in the DCU, including in Superman and Peacemaker: Season 2, focusing on this corner of the universe could provide the connective tissue needed for the new DCU. Gunn's involvement could elevate this project into a central piece of the DCU puzzle.
The 2016 Batman v Superman fell short of expectations, leaving fans wanting a more heroic team-up. Gunn could bring his unique touch to a Batman & Superman: World's Finest movie, emphasizing their friendship and collaborative efforts. This could be a surefire hit to bolster the DCU's growth, with Gunn writing and directing.
The Titans have a rich history and a dedicated fanbase, making them a prime candidate for a DCU introduction. A live-action movie could capitalize on the dysfunctional yet loving family dynamic of the team, something Gunn has excelled at with the Guardians of the Galaxy. His touch could transform the Titans into one of DC's standout super-teams on the big screen.
Given the "Gods and Monsters" theme of the DCU's first phase, Justice League Dark could be the perfect vehicle to explore the supernatural elements of the DC Universe. Featuring magical heroes like Zatanna and John Constantine, this film could offer a unique blend of weirdness and dysfunction that aligns with Gunn's storytelling strengths.
