"Leader's Design in Captain America: Brave New World Inspired by Comic Book Art"

Every superhero saga needs its antagonist, and in Captain America: Brave New World, fans are introduced to The Leader, portrayed by actor Tim Blake Nelson. The character's transformation was brought to life through practical effects and makeup, resulting in a visibly mutated appearance that deviates somewhat from his comic book origins.
Blue Whale Studios, the Atlanta-based special effects company responsible for The Leader's design and effects in the MCU film, has now shared insights into their initial concept for Sam Sterns' alter ego, which more closely aligns with the comic book version. Their original design leaned towards a sickly aesthetic, featuring an engorged head and pale green skin. While this design was straightforward and lacked the intricate mutation details seen in the final film, it was a faithful nod to the comics. Blue Whale Studios also shared a video on Instagram showcasing the application of prosthetics to Nelson, offering fans a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes.
"We were originally tasked with designing and applying the practical makeup for The Leader on the incomparable Tim Blake Nelson in *Captain America: Brave New World*," Blue Whale Studios stated. "As often happens in film, the story evolved, and during reshoots, the creative direction shifted. Our version was ultimately not used in the final cut. Nevertheless, we remain incredibly proud of the work we created.
"Drawing inspiration from the original comic book art, we developed a look that felt both grounded and iconic — true to the source while achieving a refined, natural realism. Technically, we were thrilled with how lightweight and comfortable the final makeup was for the actor — an achievement made possible by the dedication of an extraordinary team."
This initial design closely resembles The Leader's first appearance in the Marvel comic universe, which debuted in 1964's Tales to Astonish #62. Interestingly, the final design seen in Brave New World reflects more recent portrayals of the character, particularly from 2018's Immortal Hulk.
The Leader was first hinted at as a potential MCU villain in 2008's *The Incredible Hulk*. In that film, Sam Sterns is exposed to Bruce Banner's blood, which is laden with Gamma radiation. At the time, he was still a normal human, but over time, this exposure transformed him into the character we see at the beginning of *Brave New World*.
In May of last year, reports surfaced that Captain America: Brave New World was undergoing reshoots to incorporate a new villainous character, Sidewinder, played by Giancarlo Esposito, known for his roles in Breaking Bad, Star Wars, and The Boys. Esposito leads the Serpent Society in the film.
Ahead of the film's release, five-time WWE world champion Seth Rollins confirmed that his role was cut following extensive rewrites of the script and subsequent reshoots.
