LEGO Unveils The Lord of the Rings: The Shire Set - Start Your Epic Quest

May 15,2025 Author: Savannah

LEGO enthusiasts and fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic saga have a new reason to celebrate as LEGO introduces The Lord of the Rings: The Shire set, launching on April 2 for LEGO Insiders and April 5 for the general public. This release marks the third in a series of LEGO Lord of the Rings sets, following the impressive 6,167-piece Rivendell in 2023 and the towering 5,471-piece Barad-dûr in 2024.

The new 2,017-piece set meticulously captures the warmth and charm of The Shire. With every wall rounded or curved and surfaces laden with detailed accessories, the set offers a delightful representation of Bilbo Baggins' hobbit-hole. LEGO provided IGN with a review copy, and while the set is charming and true to its source material, it comes with a price tag that seems disproportionately high for its piece count.

Set #10354 brings to life Bilbo's home on his "eleventy-first" birthday, complete with nine minifigures including Bilbo Baggins, Frodo, Mrs. Proudfoot, Farmer Proudfoot, Merry, Pippin, Rosie Cotton, Samwise Gamgee, and Gandalf the Grey. The set's design features a cutaway at the back, showcasing three distinct rooms: a main foyer, a study, and a dining and sitting area, all connected to form a cohesive hillside exterior and a cozy interior.

The attention to detail in the set enhances the feeling of warmth and homeliness. Rugs cover the floors, letters from well-wishers are scattered around, and food items like a wedge of cheese above the fireplace and bread on the windowsill add to the lived-in feel. The set also includes artifacts from Bilbo's adventures, such as the Mithril Coat and a map leading to the Lonely Mountain, all carefully placed within the home.

A unique feature of the set is a LEGO Technic mechanism that allows the display in the fireplace to change between a charred envelope and the One Ring, recreating a key moment from the Fellowship of the Ring. The rooms' wider-than-tall design reflects the hobbit-hole's canonical appearance and creates a sense of spaciousness, while the construction remains straightforward.

Building the exterior requires more care to achieve the natural curves of the hillside, using multiple curved green pieces to mimic the gentle undulations of the landscape. This tactile experience evokes the feeling of hobbits being deeply connected to their environment, with Bag End crowned by a tree with gnarled branches.

Additional elements such as a birthday cake, the Party Tree with lanterns, a patterned tent, a red dragon firework, Gandalf's horse-drawn carriage, and a set of barrels with interlocking gears for Bilbo's disappearing act enrich the set and allow for staging scenes from the films. These details add depth and playability to the set.

Despite its simpler build compared to Rivendell and Barad-dûr, the set's pricing raises questions. At 2,017 pieces for $270, it falls 34% above the traditional 10 cents per brick metric. This is a stark contrast to the more cost-effective Rivendell and Barad-dûr sets. Even compared to other high-profile sets like the LEGO Star Wars sets, such as Jabba's Sail Barge, the pricing of The Shire seems disproportionate.

Nevertheless, The Shire remains the most budget-friendly option for Lord of the Rings fans looking to expand their collection. The question remains whether LEGO's brand loyalty and the enduring popularity of Tolkien's work can justify this pricing model.
