Magic: The Gathering Universe Goes Cinematic

Apr 05,2025 Author: Joseph

Hasbro has exciting news for fans of Magic: The Gathering—they're bringing the beloved card game to screens everywhere. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hasbro is teaming up with Legendary Entertainment to craft a shared Magic: The Gathering universe that will span both movies and TV shows, with the movie taking the lead.

Legendary Entertainment, known for blockbuster hits like Dune and the epic Godzilla series including Godzilla vs Kong, as well as Detective Pikachu, is spearheading this venture. "We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than Magic: The Gathering," stated Legendary’s chairman of worldwide production.

While details are still emerging, it appears that the movie and TV projects at Legendary might not be connected to the previously announced Magic: The Gathering animated series set for Netflix. However, there's a possibility that plans have evolved, and the animated series could now be integrated into this expansive shared universe.

Magic: The Gathering is a legendary card game that was first introduced by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. Since then, it has grown into one of the world's most popular trading card games. Wizards of the Coast became part of Hasbro in 1999, further expanding the game's reach and influence.

Hasbro is no newcomer to transforming its iconic products into cinematic experiences. The company has successfully adapted properties like G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Dungeons and Dragons into films. Currently, Hasbro has a robust lineup of upcoming projects, including new G.I. Joe movies, a fresh Power Rangers film, and even a Beyblade movie, showcasing their commitment to bringing their beloved brands to life on the big screen.
