Fans of the iconic fighting game franchise are in for a treat as Mortal Kombat 2 unveils a fresh lineup of characters set to star in the upcoming sequel. Entertainment Weekly has shared exclusive images featuring Karl Urban as the charismatic Johnny Cage, Martyn Ford as the formidable Shao Kahn, and Adeline Rudolph as the elegant Kitana, alongside the return of Hiroyuki Sanada reprising his role as Scorpion.

Speculation had been rife about how Karl Urban, known for his portrayal of Billy Butcher in The Boys, would embody the role of Johnny Cage, the egotistical Hollywood star beloved by Mortal Kombat fans. A recently revealed image showcases Urban donning Cage's signature hairstyle and sunglasses, striking a classic martial arts pose. In the backdrop, fans can spot Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, and Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade.

Ed Boon, the mastermind behind Mortal Kombat at NetherRealm Studios, shared insights into Johnny Cage's role in the sequel with Entertainment Weekly. "His integration into the Mortal Kombat story and universe is a big part of what this movie explores," Boon explained. He added that Urban's portrayal brings a fresh perspective to the character, describing Cage as a "washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing." Boon teased a "ridiculously hilarious" introduction for the character, while director Simon McQuoid emphasized the balance they aimed for: "We wanted a character that wasn't just completely silly, comic book… The casting of Karl Urban for that role allowed that character to have more depth."

Entertainment Weekly also confirmed that movie-accurate skins for Urban's Johnny Cage, Rudolph's Kitana, and Ford's Shao Kahn will be introduced to Mortal Kombat 1 later this year, much to the delight of gamers.

In an exciting twist, Damon Herriman from Better Man steps into the role of Quan Chi, while Josh Lawson and Max Huang reprise their roles as Kano and Kung Lao, respectively. These characters met their demise in the first film, but Boon explains that the flexible lore of the Mortal Kombat games, involving spirits and the NetherRealm, allows for their return: "So we deal with spirits and the NetherRealm and things like that. There are ways to bring dead characters back."

Rounding out the cast are Tati Gabrielle from The Last of Us Season 2 as Jade and Ana Thu Nguyen from NCIS: Sydney as Queen Sindel. Mortal Kombat 2 is slated to hit theaters on October 24, 2025, promising fans an action-packed continuation of the saga.
