MultiVersus, the free-to-play crossover fighting game launched in 2024, will soon shut down permanently.
Player First Games announced in January that MultiVersus Season 5 would be its final season, confirming the game's closure at 5PM PDT/12PM EDT on May 30, 2025. Reports indicate Warner Bros. Discovery considered the project a significant failure - during a November 2024 earnings call, executives revealed MultiVersus severely underperformed expectations, resulting in a $100 million write-down for their gaming division. This came alongside cumulative losses reaching $300 million following the underwhelming reception of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in early 2024.
Within a month of this disclosure, Warner Bros. canceled its Wonder Woman title and shuttered three development studios: Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and MultiVersus creator Player First Games.
In response to a thread titled "MultiVersus shuts down tomorrow - share your final thoughts about the game," hundreds of fans recounted cherished memories:
"MultiVersus was revolutionary - a platform fighter emphasizing aggressive gameplay and innovative 2v2 team dynamics," wrote one player. "Beyond the brilliant core concepts, the voice casting was phenomenal. Hearing legendary actors reprise their roles - Kevin Conroy's Batman, Matthew Lillard's Shaggy, Kate Micucci's Velma, John DiMaggio's Jake, Eric Bauza's Bugs/Marvin - with authentic character interactions created magic."
"While some character inclusions and move designs raised eyebrows (Ultra Instinct Shaggy? Banana Guard?), most fighters showcased creative brilliance. We'll never see another game quite like this."

"Nothing compares to that beta experience in 2022," replied another fan. "I became completely addicted to its frenetic pace. When I got sick that summer, this was all I played. Really hoping for some form of revival someday."
"This game joins PlayStation All-Stars in my personal hall of fame," mourned another player, while a different commenter noted: "Tom & Jerry's fighting mechanics reignited my passion for the genre - some of the most inventive gameplay I've ever experienced."

Some remain cautiously hopeful, though most acknowledge revival seems unlikely given "the licensing complexities involved." Nevertheless, preservation efforts have begun ahead of the server shutdown.
