Its history includes: the 2008 Xbox 360 exclusive; NINJA GAIDEN Sigma 2 (2009, PS3), a modified version for German release; NINJA GAIDEN Sigma 2 Plus (2013, PS Vita), featuring added content and restored gore; and the inclusion in the 2021 NINJA GAIDEN Master Collection (PS4, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC).

NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black restores the visceral gore absent in NINJA GAIDEN Sigma 2, a key element of the series' identity. Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel return as playable characters alongside Ryu Hayabusa. A new "HERO PLAY STYLE" mode offers additional support for players, while combat balancing and enemy placement adjustments refine the gameplay experience.
