Nintendo has provided our first detailed glimpse at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just ahead of the console's much-anticipated launch next month. The latest video from Nintendo's Nintendo Today app showcases the official Switch 2 carry case, designed with slots to safely store up to six cartridges from both the Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2.
As previously confirmed, Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same size and shape as their Switch 1 counterparts, allowing the new console to use a single cartridge slot for games from both generations. However, a striking difference is the cartridge's color: Switch 2 cartridges are distinctively red. This color choice appears to be a universal standard, not limited to the Mario Kart World cartridge featured in the video. If you haven't yet downloaded the Nintendo Today app, you can catch the video shared by OatmealDome on X / Twitter.
The top of the cartridge's design sticker also proudly displays the Switch 2 logo, differentiating it from the original Nintendo Switch design. The official Switch 2 carrying case offers space for the console with the new Joy-Con 2 attached, six cartridges, and two Joy-Con 2 straps.

Beyond the color and logo, Switch 2 cartridges remain identical to their predecessors, including the notorious foul-tasting coating applied by Nintendo to deter people from putting them in their mouths. Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta emphasized the safety measure, stating to GameSpot, "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption. We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."
