Nintendo Switch 2: Mario Kart 9 Leaks Hint at Major Hardware Upgrade

Feb 22,2025 Author: Jonathan

An indie game developer with extensive experience creating Switch titles has offered compelling evidence suggesting the Switch 2 boasts significantly enhanced processing power. This conclusion is drawn primarily from analyzing the brief Mario Kart 9 footage showcased in the recent Switch 2 reveal.

Nintendo's official specifications remain undisclosed, leaving much to speculation. While upgrades like redesigned Joy-Cons and a larger form factor are confirmed, the true power of the Switch 2 is yet to be officially revealed.

Jerrel Dulay of Sungrand Studios, a developer with a history of working on Wii U and 3DS titles, presented his analysis in a YouTube video. He highlights several key graphical elements in the Mario Kart 9 footage as indicators of a substantial power increase:

Dulay points to the use of physically-based shaders, impacting reflections and lighting, as a significant factor. These shaders were computationally expensive on the original Switch, often impacting frame rates. The Mario Kart 9 footage showcases extensive use of these shaders without apparent performance issues.

Furthermore, the high-resolution ground textures and numerous unique textures suggest a considerable increase in RAM. Rumors and leaks point towards the Switch 2 featuring 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM, a substantial upgrade from the original Switch's 4GB. The increased RAM capacity and potential higher memory transfer rates would significantly improve texture loading times and overall performance.

The presence of volumetric lighting and detailed, far-reaching shadows further supports the claim of increased processing power. These features were extremely challenging to implement on the original Switch due to their computational demands.

Finally, the high polygon count characters and real-time cloth physics on the flagpoles add to the overall impression of a significant leap in graphical capabilities.

Dulay's analysis, while based on observation of a short video clip, provides a compelling argument for a substantial power upgrade in the Switch 2. While we await Nintendo's official April Direct for confirmation, his insights offer a valuable perspective on the potential graphical advancements.
