The initial moments of the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer showcase a console that is notably larger than its predecessor. As the original Joy-Cons detach, the tablet section of the Switch expands and transforms into its new, upgraded form. This size increase indicates that Nintendo is shifting away from the compact handhelds of its past, aligning more closely with larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.
While Nintendo has not released exact size specifications for the Switch 2, we can estimate its dimensions based on the trailer and a recent leak. At CES 2025, we had the opportunity to interact with a Switch 2 mock-up designed by Genki. Although we couldn't verify its accuracy at the time, the trailer's depiction of the console closely matches the Genki model, suggesting our measurements are likely close to the final product.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size
We estimate that the **Switch 2 features an 8-inch screen**. This measurement refers to the diagonal length of the display, not including the bezels. This size aligns with a rumor from early 2024, and we anticipate the display to measure approximately 177mm in width and 99mm in height.
If these estimates hold true, the Switch 2's screen would be nearly 30% larger diagonally and **66% larger in total area** than the original Switch's 6.2-inch LCD. A larger screen can enhance the gaming experience, provided the display quality is up to par.
Compared to other handhelds, the Switch 2's screen is significantly larger. It will be 45% larger diagonally and 111% larger in area than the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD. Against the Switch OLED's 7-inch display, the Switch 2's screen will be 14% larger diagonally and 30% larger in area.
In the current market, the Switch 2 faces competition from devices like the Steam Deck. The original Steam Deck and the Steam Deck OLED have 7-inch and 7.4-inch screens, respectively, with a 16:10 aspect ratio. Despite this, the Switch 2's 8-inch screen will still be larger, with an 8% increase in diagonal size and an 11% increase in total area compared to the Steam Deck OLED.

Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size
The larger screen necessitates a bigger console overall. The original Switch was already a challenge to fit into jeans pockets, and the Switch 2 will likely require cargo pants pockets or a bag for portability.
Our measurements of the Genki mock-up at CES suggest that the Switch 2, including the Joy-Cons, is approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall. This would make the Switch 2 **25% larger** than the original Switch, which measures 239mm long and 102mm tall.
The Switch 2 would also be about 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and roughly 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm). While we couldn't measure the depth precisely, the Switch 2 appears to maintain a thickness similar to the original Switch's half-inch.

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size
The Switch 2 reveal trailer shows that the Joy-Con controllers will retain a similar width but will be taller. Our analysis suggests that the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons will be about 32mm wide and 115mm tall**, maintaining the original width and adding 13mm in height to match the larger console. This makes the new Joy-Con **13% larger** than the originals.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size
Subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate the **Switch 2 screen unit to be 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This is approximately **31% larger** than the original Switch's screen unit.
The new unit size accommodates the 8-inch 16:9 screen, with an estimated 11mm bezel on the sides and an 8mm bezel on the top and bottom. This results in slimmer side bezels compared to the original Switch, while the top and bottom bezels remain similar.
Keep in mind that these are all estimated measurements based on our analysis and may differ from the official dimensions Nintendo will eventually release. However, given our experience with the Genki mock-up, we believe these estimates are reasonably accurate. We anticipate the Switch 2 to be about 25% larger than the original Switch when we get our hands on it later this year.
