Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has reached the culmination of its development journey with the release of Patch 8, its final major update, on April 15, 2025. This landmark update has not only marked the end of Larian Studios' work on the game but has also sparked renewed interest among players, pushing the concurrent player count on Steam from around 60,000 to an impressive 169,000.
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke took to Twitter (X) on April 22 to celebrate the surge in player numbers, attributing it to the robust mod support that allows the community to keep the game alive. Vincke also hinted at the studio's next venture, stating they are shifting focus from the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) Universe to an entirely new project.
With Larian Studios stepping away from the D&D universe, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, the owners of D&D, are set to continue the Baldur’s Gate saga. They are currently exploring potential collaborations to develop a possible Baldur’s Gate 4.
Patch 8, announced back in November 2024, has been a long time coming. It brings a wealth of new content, including 12 new subclasses, a much-requested photo mode, and cross-play functionality. The detailed patch notes, available on BG3’s official website, showcase not only these new features but also a comprehensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments designed to refine the game's final form.
