Pedro Pascal Addresses Fantastic Four Casting Backlash

Nov 30,2025 Author: Aaron

Pedro Pascal has openly acknowledged the mixed reactions to his casting as Reed Richards in Marvel's upcoming "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," but revealed that Robert Downey Jr.—who played Iron Man and now Doctor Doom—has been a source of encouragement.

The 50-year-old actor will join the MCU this July as part of "The Fantastic Four" ensemble. With Marvel Studios and Disney aiming for stronger box office success than this year's other MCU releases ("Captain America: Brave New World" and "Thunderbolts*"), the pressure is on for what could be 2025's biggest film.

In a Vanity Fair interview, Pascal admitted he's more aware of fan "disgruntlement" over his casting as Mister Fantastic than for any previous role—surpassing even the skepticism around his turns as Joel in HBO's "The Last of Us," Oberyn Martell in "Game of Thrones," and the lead in "The Mandalorian."

"What excites me is seeing how closely the project aligns with our creative vision—pouring our hearts into this genre," he said. "But you can never predict whether audiences will embrace that passion."

"The backlash stands out more than with anything I've done before," Pascal added. "Critics say I'm too old, miscast, or need to shave."

Since Pascal's casting was announced, debates have swirled about whether he fits Reed Richards' classic look. While some critique his mustachioed portrayal, others argue performances transcend appearances—especially given we've only seen brief glimpses of his take on the character.

Pascal confirmed an unexpected supporter: Robert Downey Jr., who will share the screen with him in 2026's "Avengers: Doomsday." The actor remained tight-lipped about the secretive project but praised Downey's mentorship. "His generosity makes you feel safe to embrace fear, uncertainty—every emotion," Pascal noted.

Marvel Studios appears bullish about this "Fantastic Four" reboot. Reports indicate sequel plans are already underway, though the first film doesn't premiere for over a month.
