If you enjoy board games, you’ve probably played or at least heard of Catan. Now, the classic game is receiving a fresh expansion—this time to the screen. Netflix and Asmodee are collaborating to adapt the iconic board game Catan into live-action, animated, and unscripted series, marking its first on-screen incarnation.
Several projects are currently in development, aiming to transform the island of Catan—where settlers trade, build, and sometimes face robberies—into a dynamic, story-driven universe.
Have you tried Catan on Android?
Catan is a multiplayer tabletop game designed by Klaus Teuber, originally released in Germany in 1995 as "The Settlers of Catan." Players compete to establish and expand settlements on the island by gathering and trading resources such as wood, brick, and ore.
On Android, USM launched the first digital version, Catan Classic, in 2011. Later, in November 2017, they introduced Catan Universe, which includes the base game, the card game Catan – The Duel, several expansions, and Catan – Rise of the Inkas.
Catan Universe offers free matches against two other players. You can try the introductory game of Catan – The Duel at no cost, or complete the "Arrival on Catan" tutorial to permanently unlock single-player mode against AI opponents.
The app is free to download on the Google Play Store.
Returning to Netflix's Catan projects
The adaptation is being produced by Darren Kyman of Asmodee, Pete Fenlon of Catan Studio, and Klaus Teuber’s sons, Guido and Benjamin Teuber. Asmodee CEO Thomas Koegler noted that the partnership with Netflix will introduce the game’s rich world and strategic depth to viewers who may never have handled a hexagonal tile.
