Rumors are swirling that a Nintendo Switch 2 port of the critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2 could hit the shelves by the end of 2025. Additionally, whispers suggest a next-gen upgrade for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S is in the works.
According to GameReactor, sources close to Rockstar Games have indicated that not only is a Switch 2 version of this Wild West epic on its way, but a "next-gen upgrade patch" will also enhance the gaming experience on current-gen consoles. While specifics remain under wraps, it's reported that both the port and the upgrade could be available as early as later this year.
These rumors are echoed by Nintenduo, which mentions that the Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 is expected to launch within Take-Two's current fiscal year, ending March 31, 2026. It's still uncertain whether this version will be a digital-only release or if a physical edition will also be offered.
When Red Dead Redemption 2 first launched in 2018, IGN hailed it as a "masterpiece," awarding it a perfect 10/10. In IGN's Red Dead Redemption 2 review, the game was celebrated as "a meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era."
The prospect of Red Dead Redemption 2 making its way to the Switch 2 may not be surprising, especially following comments from Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick during a recent Q&A with investors. Zelnick expressed "great optimism" for Nintendo's new platform, citing improved third-party support compared to previous Nintendo systems.
Zelnick noted, "We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform. Historically, being a third-party in the Nintendo business has been a bit challenging. I think Nintendo has been very forthcoming in addressing that. And we're stepping up too, because we have great optimism for the platform. In terms of what we would bring to any platform, we address it on a case-by-case basis, we obviously want to be where the consumers are. But we would not necessarily bring every title to every platform. There are also great catalog opportunities as well."
Among the titles confirmed for the Switch 2 are Civilization 7 on its launch day, June 5, along with games from the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series (though specific titles and release dates remain unclear), and Borderlands 4 set for September 12. These selections aren't surprising given Take-Two's history of publishing these franchises on the original Nintendo Switch. However, Zelnick's comments suggest that the door might be open for additional releases, particularly from Take-Two's extensive back catalog. While a port of GTA 6 seems unlikely, there's a possibility for titles like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 to make the transition.
