The first official trailer for the movie "Rust," starring Alec Baldwin, has been released. This film, set to hit theaters on May 2, 2025, carries a somber note due to a tragic incident during its production. On October 22, 2021, a prop gun used by Baldwin accidentally discharged, resulting in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and the injury of director Joel Souza. The incident occurred when Baldwin was demonstrating how he would draw the gun from its holster, pointing it at the camera where Hutchins and Souza were positioned. The gun, mistakenly labeled as a "cold gun" free of live ammunition, tragically misfired.
Following the incident, legal proceedings ensued. Charges against Baldwin were dropped in April 2023. However, Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, responsible for preparing the gun, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison. First assistant director David Halls, tasked with ensuring the gun's safety, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon and received six months of probation.
The film's plot, set in 1880s Kansas, follows Lucas McCalister (Patrick Scott McDermott), a recently orphaned young man who accidentally kills a rancher and is sentenced to hang. His estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (played by Alec Baldwin), rescues him from jail, and together they flee toward Mexico. Pursued by U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter known as 'Preacher' (Travis Fimmel), the duo navigates the harsh wilderness in a desperate bid for freedom.
"Rust" made its initial public appearance at Poland's Camerimage Festival in November 2024, where it paid tribute to Halyna Hutchins during the credits. Although Baldwin was not present at the event, director Joel Souza attended and spoke fondly of Hutchins, emphasizing her love for the art of filmmaking and her significant talent.
