Sega Reveals New Virtua Fighter Gameplay Footage

Summary

  • Sega has released new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game.
  • This will be the franchise's first entry in about 20 years.
  • The game's development will be handled by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio.

Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the highly anticipated next installment in the Virtua Fighter series, marking the franchise's first new entry in nearly two decades. The Virtua Fighter brand, which has been largely inactive since the release of Virtua Fighter 5, is now poised for a significant revival.

The last major release in the series was Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, a remastered version that hit PlayStation 4 and Japanese arcades in 2021. This title is set to expand its reach with a Steam release scheduled for January 2025, just ahead of the new game's debut.

The new footage was showcased during NVIDIA's keynote at the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show. The video begins with a brief transitional scene before diving into a simulated combat sequence. The choreography is notably precise, resembling a well-rehearsed martial arts film rather than a typical fighting game match. This release comes at a time when other major fighting game franchises have also seen new entries, potentially marking the 2020s as a golden era for the genre.

New Virtua Fighter Footage Highlights Evolving Visuals

The showcased clip, while not featuring actual gameplay, uses in-engine graphics to provide a glimpse into the visual direction of the new Virtua Fighter. The video moves away from the series' traditional hyper-stylized and polygonal aesthetics, aiming for a more realistic look that sits between the styles of Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The trailer prominently features Akira, the franchise's iconic character, in two new outfits that depart from his classic bandanna and spiky hair look.

Development of the new Virtua Fighter is being led by Sega's Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind the Yakuza series and co-developers of the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster with Sega AM2. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is also working on Sega's Project Century, indicating their significant role in Sega's future gaming projects.

Details about the new Virtua Fighter remain scarce, with project director Riichirou Yamada offering only brief insights into the game's direction. However, Sega's commitment to revitalizing the Virtua Fighter brand is evident, as they continue to share glimpses of the upcoming title. As Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi declared during the VF Direct 2024 livestream, "Virtua Fighter is finally back!"
