Smash Together, an unofficial dating app designed for Super Smash Bros. fans to connect, announced it received a cease-and-desist letter just days before its planned open beta.
The app was set to launch its open beta on May 15 after months of development. However, on May 13, the official account shared a melancholic Yoshi meme, stating: "We got cease and desisted." (Thanks for the heads-up, Automaton.)

The developers did not disclose the source of the cease-and-desist, though many speculate it came from Nintendo, given the app’s ties to Super Smash Bros.
SmashTogether marketed itself as the "premier dating platform for Super Smash Bros. enthusiasts," promising to pair users with their "ideal Doubles partner, in-game and beyond" using a specialized matchmaking algorithm.
Screenshots of the app showcased features like selecting your preferred character, or "main," highlighting notable victories, and answering prompts tailored to the Smash Bros. community, such as: "I'm looking for... Someone who can make it out of pools at a major."
Beyond potential intellectual property and copyright issues, the concept of a dating app centered on a game like Super Smash Bros. likely prompted the legal action.
The SmashTogether team has not commented on whether they will pursue an alternative approach without relying on the Super Smash Bros. brand. For now, the project remains on hold, and the developers are keeping their next steps under wraps.
