The next chapter in the Sonic the Hedgehog saga is speeding towards theaters! Paramount Pictures has officially slated Sonic the Hedgehog 4 for a March 19, 2027 release, as reported by Variety. While plot details remain under wraps, the announcement comes on the heels of Sonic the Hedgehog 3's impressive box office success.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 raked in a remarkable $218 million domestically and over $420 million globally, solidifying its place as the highest-grossing film in the franchise. This achievement is particularly noteworthy considering the initial controversy surrounding the character's design, which underwent significant revisions during post-production.
Furthermore, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 secured the second spot as the highest-grossing video game movie in North America, trailing only the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, continuing the cinematic rivalry between Nintendo and Sega.
The live-action Sonic universe continues to expand, encompassing three feature films and a Knuckles-centric spin-off series. The films follow Sonic (Ben Schwartz) as he confronts his arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Subsequent installments have introduced beloved characters like Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba), with Sonic 3 finally bringing Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) into the fray.
While Sonic 3 hinted at another character joining the franchise, we'll keep that a surprise. For more details, including a guide to new characters and our Sonic 3 review, check out our related articles.
