Sega describes the experience as, "Players control a character from the Sonic series as they navigate a toy world crafted by the notorious Dr. Eggman, tackling perilous obstacle courses and hazardous arenas!"

Given its free-to-play model, concerns about potential pay-to-win elements have surfaced. However, Sonic Rumble's Director, Makoto Tase, addressed these worries during an interview with Automaton at the Tokyo Game Show 2024 in September 2024. He clarified, "Our goal is to implement a casual purchasing system where players can quickly buy what they want for a small, fixed amount, steering clear of the gacha system that relies on probability for item acquisition."
