Sonic Rumble marks the franchise's first venture into multiplayer party gaming, allowing up to 32 players to compete in diverse levels and challenges. Sega describes the experience as, "Players control a character from the Sonic series as they navigate a toy world crafted by the notorious Dr. Eggman, tackling perilous obstacle courses and hazardous arenas!"
Given its free-to-play model, concerns about potential pay-to-win elements have surfaced. However, Sonic Rumble's Director, Makoto Tase, addressed these worries during an interview with Automaton at the Tokyo Game Show 2024 in September 2024. He clarified, "Our goal is to implement a casual purchasing system where players can quickly buy what they want for a small, fixed amount, steering clear of the gacha system that relies on probability for item acquisition."
Shortly after announcing the release date, Sega revealed that Sonic Rumble has surpassed 900,000 pre-registrations. Each milestone in the pre-registration campaign unlocks valuable in-game rewards for players, setting them up for success from the start.
Currently, Sonic Rumble has not yet reached the final milestone of its pre-registration campaign. The specific goal remains undisclosed, but fans speculate it might be set at 1 million or higher, in line with similar campaigns for other games. With several weeks left until the launch on May 8, 2025, there's plenty of time to reach this target.
