Marvel's Spider-Man 2's PC launch on Steam and the Epic Games Store was notable for its lack of pre-order or pre-download options, resulting in a massive 140GB download. This, coupled with the absence of robust anti-piracy measures, made it a relatively easy target for hackers.
Indeed, within an hour of release, cracked versions of the game appeared online, highlighting the minimal security implemented. Sony's understated marketing campaign, and the late release of system requirements, further contributed to the situation.
Despite this, Spider-Man 2 has already secured a respectable seventh place amongst Sony's biggest Steam releases, though it trails behind titles like God of War, Horizon, and Days Gone.
Initial player reception, however, is mixed. At the time of writing, the game holds a 55% positive rating based on over 1,280 reviews, with users citing optimization issues, crashes, and bugs.
Spider-Man Remastered remains the undisputed PC champion in terms of online player count, having once peaked at over 66,000 concurrent players. Whether Spider-Man 2 can match this success remains to be seen, but current sales trends suggest a promising outcome over the weekend.
