Mouse Support Confirmed by Patent

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

Nintendo's recently published patent (WIPO, February 6, 2025) confirms speculation regarding the Switch 2 Joy-Cons' mouse-like capabilities. The patent description details a sensor that detects reflected light from a surface, enabling mouse-like functionality by tracking movement across that surface. This corroborates the brief glimpse in the Switch 2 reveal trailer showing the Joy-Con being used on a flat surface. This revelation is significant, as Nintendo has remained relatively silent on Switch 2 specifics.

Enhanced Joy-Con Functionality and New Controllers

The Switch 2 Joy-Cons retain the detachable design of their predecessors. However, the patent highlights the addition of mouse functionality, described as a sensor detecting changes in reflected light as the controller moves across a surface.

A new charging dock capable of charging up to two Joy-Cons simultaneously is also mentioned. A magnetic attachment, including a wrist strap, secures the Joy-Cons to the console.

The patent also introduces a novel controller design: a standard controller split into two halves, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse operation. These halves can be combined using a separate attachment to form a standard controller.

It's important to note that the patent details might not fully represent the final Switch 2 product. Nintendo hasn't officially confirmed these features.

Upcoming Nintendo Direct: All Will Be Revealed

Nintendo of America announced (Twitter/X, February 5, 2025) the official date for a Nintendo Direct focused on the Switch 2. This presentation will air April 2, 2025, at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET across all official Nintendo social media platforms. While the Switch 2's 2025 release is confirmed, a precise release date remains unannounced. Visit our dedicated Switch 2 page for further updates.
