Unlock the Golden Key: Unravel the Mystery of the Yellow Orb in DQ3

Feb 25,2025 Author: Lillian

This guide explains how to obtain the elusive Yellow Orb in the Dragon Quest 3 Remake. While the process is relatively simple, finding the starting point can be challenging.

The Yellow Orb is located in Merchantburg, a town initially appearing as "???" on the map. Its name is determined by the merchant you hire and leave there. You must establish and develop this village to acquire the orb.

Locating Merchantburg (???)

Merchantburg Location

After obtaining the ship from the King of Portoga (following the Black Pepper quest), Merchantburg is accessible in the northeast corner of the map. Sail west from the coast to reach the easternmost edge of the eastern continent.

Optimal Timing for Merchantburg

While orb collection order is flexible, establishing Merchantburg early is recommended due to the town's growth time. This allows you to gather other orbs concurrently.

Acquiring the Yellow Orb

Hiring a Merchant

  1. Hire a Merchant: Visit PALS in Aliahan to recruit a new merchant. Minimize combat en route.

  2. Establish Merchantburg: At Merchantburg, speak to the old man in the building. Offer your merchant; they'll leave your party to establish the town, revealing its name.

  3. Merchantburg's Growth: Collect the Purple (Orochi's Lair) and Blue (Gaia's Navel) Orbs. You'll receive notifications to revisit Merchantburg as it progresses through five growth stages. The fourth visit involves a large club's construction. Note that your merchant may become unpopular with some townsfolk.

Merchantburg Growth Stages

  1. The Revolt: On your fifth visit (at night), you'll find the merchant imprisoned after a town revolt. Speak to him to learn the Yellow Orb's location.

  2. Finding the Orb: Return to the merchant's former home. A quest marker will appear behind the sofa; interact with the ground to uncover the Yellow Orb.

The Yellow Orb is typically obtained second to last. The Red Orb is found at the Pirates' Den, the Green Orb in Theddon, and the Silver Orb in the Maw of the Necrogond/Necrogond Shrine.
