Warframe's Ninth TennoCon: A Blast from the Past with Warframe: 1999
TennoCon 2024 delivered a knockout punch with the announcement of Warframe: 1999, a massive update promising a thrilling trip back to a retro-futuristic 1999. This isn't just another expansion; it's a complete shift in setting and style.
The journey begins with a prologue quest, "The Lotus Eaters," launching in August 2024. This serves as a crucial bridge, reuniting players with a beloved character and setting the stage for the main event in Winter 2024. Completing "The Lotus Eaters" (and all preceding story content) is mandatory before diving into the 1999 storyline. This prologue also introduces Sevatgoth Prime and exclusive weaponry.
Warframe: 1999 plunges players into an alternate 1999 Earth, where the Y2K bug manifests as a deadly virus threatening global catastrophe. The setting is Höllvania, a vibrant 90s city corrupted by Techrot. Players will navigate this neon-drenched landscape on Atomicyles, futuristic vehicles capable of bullet jumps, drifts, and even explosive maneuvers.
The core of the update centers around the Hex, a team of six characters sporting Protoframes – unique Warframes showcasing their human forms. The team boasts a star-studded voice cast, including Alpha Takahashi, Ben Starr, Melissa Medina, and Amelia Tyler. Players can interact with the characters through an authentic 1999-style instant messaging system.
Adding to the retro charm, players will face off against On-lyne, a 90s boy band corrupted by Technocyte Coda. Their infectiously catchy music, including the hit single "Party of Your Lifetime," is available on major streaming platforms.
Fashion takes center stage with significant upgrades to the fashion system. Players can now equip two fashion frame loadouts and utilize the new Gemini Skins, allowing Protoframes like Arthur and Aoi to seamlessly transition into the Origin System. These skins come with fully voiced dialogue, adding depth to the already impressive voice acting.
Beyond the main update, Digital Extremes announced a collaboration with THE LINE to create an anime short based on Warframe: 1999, launching later this year. Additionally, new Heirloom skins for Ember (available now) and Rhino (coming early 2025) are on the way.
Warframe: 1999 promises a nostalgic yet action-packed adventure. With a compelling storyline, engaging characters, and stylish new features, this update is a must-have for Warframe fans. Download Warframe now from the App Store to prepare for the arrival of Warframe: 1999 this Winter.
