Absolute Batman: A Hulking Hero and a Reimagined Mythos

Absolute Batman is a monumental DC Comics launch, achieving the best-selling comic book status of 2024 and maintaining its top position ever since. This bold reimagining of the Dark Knight has clearly resonated with readers.

Following the conclusion of their first arc, "The Zoo," creators Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta spoke with IGN about their innovative approach to the Batman mythos. This interview delves into the design of the impressively muscular Batman, the impact of Bruce Wayne having a living mother, and the looming threat of Absolute Joker.

Designing Absolute Batman

The Absolute Universe's Batman is a truly intimidating figure. His physique, shoulder spikes, and modified Batsuit are striking, earning him a spot among IGN's 10 greatest Batman costumes. Snyder and Dragotta discussed their design choices, particularly in reflecting a Batman lacking the usual financial resources.

Dragotta explained Snyder's initial direction: "go big." He initially drew a large Batman, but Snyder's response was, "bigger." Dragotta continues, emphasizing the weaponized nature of this Batman's design, from his emblem to every element of his suit. It's no longer just a utility belt; everything serves a tactical purpose.

Snyder highlights the significance of Batman's immense size as a compensatory factor for his lack of wealth. Traditional Batman's intimidation factor stems from his fighting prowess, detective skills, theatricality, and significant wealth. This Batman, lacking the financial advantage, compensates with sheer physical presence and the inherent threat he embodies. His size and violent fighting style make him a force of nature, capable of confronting even the most resource-rich villains.

The influence of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns is evident, particularly in a splash page reminiscent of Miller's iconic cover. Dragotta acknowledges the homage, citing the storytelling and layout of Miller and Mazzucchelli's work as major inspirations.

Giving Batman a Family

Beyond the lack of wealth, Absolute Batman dramatically alters the Dark Knight's mythology with the revelation of Martha Wayne's survival. This significantly changes Bruce Wayne's character, giving him a mother and, consequently, more to lose.

Snyder explains the decision to keep Martha alive, noting the strong paternal relationship often depicted between Bruce and Thomas Wayne in various universes. Martha's presence provides a moral compass, offering strength and vulnerability simultaneously. Her existence introduces a new dimension to Bruce's character, adding both strength and weakness.

The introduction in issue #1 of Bruce's childhood friendships with Waylon Jones, Oswald Cobblepot, Harvey Dent, Edward Nygma, and Selina Kyle, all future members of his rogues gallery, is another significant change. Snyder hints at how these relationships shaped Bruce's evolution into Batman. He learned street smarts from Cobblepot, combat from Jones, deduction from Nygma, politics from Dent, and other crucial skills from Selina Kyle. These relationships, along with his bond with Martha, form the core of the story, adding depth and complexity to his character.

Absolute Batman vs. Absolute Black Mask

"The Zoo" arc introduces a new generation of villains, with Black Mask as the primary antagonist. Snyder explains the choice of Black Mask, emphasizing his nihilistic and hedonistic nature, fitting thematically with the arc's themes. The creators molded Black Mask to fit their vision, staying true to his core characteristics while creating a fresh interpretation.

The confrontation between Batman and Black Mask in issue #6 is a brutal showdown, culminating in Black Mask's defeat and the gouging of his eyes. Snyder highlights Batman's defiant attitude, fueled by the belief that he can make a difference despite the odds.

The Threat of Absolute Joker

The looming presence of Absolute Joker, teased since issue #1, is a significant plot point. Snyder explains that Joker represents the inverse of Batman in this universe – the system to Batman's disruption. This Joker is already a formidable villain, having evolved independently of Batman, unlike the traditional origin story.

Dragotta hints at Joker's immense power and a master plan unfolding, emphasizing the mystery surrounding his character and upcoming storyline.

What to Expect From Absolute Mr. Freeze and Absolute Bane

Issues #7 and #8 feature a detour with Mr. Freeze, introduced by artist Marcos Martin. Snyder describes a twisted and horrifying interpretation of the character, reflecting Bruce's internal struggles. The upcoming confrontation with Bane promises another imposing villain, defying expectations by maintaining Bane's significant size to further emphasize Batman's imposing stature.

Snyder also hints at future crossovers within the Absolute Universe, stating that interactions between characters and villains will become more prominent in 2025 and beyond.
