Minecraft Movie's Funniest Scene Inspired by The NeverEnding Story

Minor spoilers ahead for A Minecraft Movie.

The creative minds behind A Minecraft Movie shared an intriguing detail with IGN: one of the film's most hilarious scenes drew inspiration from the iconic film, The NeverEnding Story.

In a standout moment, Jack Black's character, Steve, finds himself in a precarious situation, forced to hitch a ride on Jason Momoa's Garrett due to a shortage of Elytra wings, which are only available for Garrett and Sebastian Hansen's Henry. This scene not only delivers a dose of physical comedy but also showcases Steve's frantic efforts to avoid a plummet to the ground. The inspiration behind this scene, however, runs deeper than mere humor.

Play"We definitely wanted to capture a Falkor moment from The Neverending Story—majestic and beautiful, yet quickly spiraling out of control," explained A Minecraft Movie director, Jared Hess.

"It was hilarious during the breaks between takes," added producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson. "Jack was perched on Jason, entangled in this complex rig, and he began serenading us with The NeverEnding Story theme, playfully riding Jason as if he were Falkor."

This scene holds a special nod for fans, as Jack Black previously portrayed Slip in The NeverEnding Story 3. For Jason Momoa, the scene was not just fun but also a creative endeavor.

"I had a hand in writing that scene, and Jack was all in," Momoa shared with a chuckle. "After Top Gun: Maverick hit the theaters, I wanted to incorporate a similar thrill—launching into action, then hitting the brakes and sliding. Jack and I brainstormed this stunt at the hotel, and it was so good that it made it into the final cut. It's phenomenal."

Jack Black added, "There were different versions of that scene, and it could have easily veered into rated R territory. But we kept it family-friendly in the end!"

"Let my hips guide you! You can't just ride me like I'm majestic," Momoa exclaimed. "I was dying, man. I was dying."
