Localthunk, the developer behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, intervened in a dispute on the game's subreddit regarding a moderator's stance on AI-generated art. The former moderator, DrTankHead, had initially stated that AI art would be permitted on both the main and NSFW Balatro subreddits, provided it was properly labeled. This statement, however, contradicted Localthunk and publisher Playstack's views.
Localthunk subsequently clarified on Bluesky and the subreddit that neither they nor Playstack condone the use of AI-generated imagery. They removed DrTankHead from the main subreddit's moderation team and announced a ban on AI-generated images going forward, promising updated rules and FAQs to reflect this change. Playstack's communications director acknowledged that the previous subreddit rules were unclear, leading to the misinterpretation. The remaining moderators are working to rectify this.
DrTankHead, in a post on the NSFW Balatro subreddit, confirmed their removal and stated that while they don't intend to make the subreddit AI-centric, they are considering a schedule where AI-generated non-NSFW art might be permitted on specific days. One user suggested a temporary break from Reddit.
The controversy highlights the ongoing debate surrounding AI art in the gaming industry. This debate is fueled by ethical concerns, copyright issues, and the limitations of current AI technology in producing high-quality, engaging content. Keywords Studios' failed experiment in creating an AI-driven game underscores these challenges. Despite this, major players like EA and Capcom are actively exploring AI's potential, while Activision recently admitted using it for some Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 assets, sparking controversy.
