Nintendo Switch 2 Uses Smartphone Camera

Nintendo Switch 2 Lets You Use Your Smartphone as a Camera, Fans Find — All You Need Are Two Inexpensive Cables.

We were already aware that the Switch 2 supports third-party USB cameras — you might even have one at home with a USB-C connection ready to plug in. But what about your smartphone, a device that's always with you and comes with a built-in camera?

As demonstrated by the YouTube channel Will It Work?, Nintendo's new console is indeed compatible with modern smartphones when connected via an HDMI to USB-C capture cable.

By connecting a USB-C to HDMI cable to your phone, and then linking that to an HDMI capture cable, your smartphone essentially becomes a device that the Switch 2 recognizes as a standard USB camera.

Will It Work? showcases this setup in a video and recommends a free app called TrueVistage, which displays the phone's camera feed in full screen without any on-screen buttons or clutter.

Once connected, the Switch 2 seamlessly displays the phone's video feed on the console. There's even a handy camera testing feature within the Switch 2's system menus to verify everything is working correctly.

Nintendo sells its own official Switch 2 Camera for $54.99, but it's a somewhat bulky accessory with limited use beyond the console. This clever workaround isn't just a fun experiment; it's a practical tip that can save you money and add convenience, especially for GameChat sessions. After all, you're more likely to have your phone with you when gaming on the go than a dedicated camera.

So, what's the cost? Links to Amazon product pages from the Will It Work? video show the necessary cables can be purchased together for around $30.98, though you might find them for less. That's already a saving of over $24 compared to the official Switch 2 Camera (or $29 versus the Piranha Plant edition). More importantly, depending on how often you'll actually use GameChat, you're avoiding buying another single-purpose gadget that might end up collecting dust.
