Avowed's Companions: A Ranked Guide from Worst to Best

Beyond their narrative roles and engaging dialogue, Avowed's Companions offer invaluable practical support, from navigating tricky pathways to delivering devastating blows in combat. This guide ranks every Avowed Companion, from least to most helpful.

  1. Marius

Marius in Avowed

My experience with Marius proved his playstyle and benefits often clashed with my own. While his passive skills aid early exploration, he's quickly outmatched by later Companions. His strengths lie in locating items and plants, but his combat capabilities are underwhelming.

Abilities & Upgrades:

  • Blinding Roots: Roots enemies (upgradeable to stun, trap multiple, and inflict Bleed).
  • Heart Seeker: Piercing shot that always hits (upgradeable to hit two enemies, increased damage vs. low-health enemies, reduced cooldown).
  • Shadow Step: Vanishes and attacks (upgradeable to instantly kill stunned enemies, increased damage vs. low-health enemies, increased targets).
  • Wounding Shots: Inflicts Bleed (upgradeable to reduce enemy damage reduction, slow enemies, reduce enemy damage).

Marius's abilities primarily focus on crowd control and weakening enemies. Effective against certain enemy types, particularly when paired with a melee Envoy, his overall power falls short for most of the Avowed journey.

  1. Giatta

Giatta in Avowed

Giatta, a support-oriented Animancer, excels at healing, shielding, and buffing the party. While lacking in raw damage, her utility shines in challenging situations like boss fights. Her protective abilities significantly benefit the Envoy and party health.

Abilities:

  • Purification: Heals allies (upgradeable to increased healing, enemy interruption, increased ally damage reduction).
  • Barrier: Provides temporary health (upgradeable to increased temporary health, healing on expiration, self-protection).
  • Acceleration: Increases movement and attack speed (upgradeable to damage reduction, extended duration, ability cooldown reduction).
  • Reconstruction: Attacks heal allies (upgradeable to increased healing for low-health allies, temporary health for full-health allies, ally revival on enemy kill).

Giatta can also activate Essence Generators, unlocking late-game areas and loot. Although not the strongest, she's a valuable asset to Envoys utilizing magic-focused Wizard builds.

  1. Kai

Kai in Avowed

Despite being an early Companion, Kai remains helpful throughout the game. A formidable tank, he delivers significant damage with minimal player intervention.

Abilities & Upgrades:

  • Fire and Ire: Blunderbuss shot with high stun and taunt (upgradeable to ignite target, increased stun, reduced cooldown).
  • Unbending Defense: Health regeneration and damage reduction (upgradeable to increased damage reduction, increased health regeneration, damaging shockwave on expiration).
  • Leap of Daring: Stunning and taunting area-of-effect attack (upgradeable to increased area of effect, temporary health per hit, bonus attack damage per hit).
  • Second Wind: Self-revival (upgradeable to increased health restoration, attack speed burst, ability cooldown reset).

Kai's abilities excel against various enemy types. Some are ideal for single, high-health targets, while others offer excellent crowd control. His self-revival makes him a highly effective, low-maintenance combat partner. He can also use fire to clear obstacles.

  1. Yatzli

Yatzli in Avowed

Yatzli, a powerful Wizard, boasts high-damage attacks and exceptional crowd control. She's the closest thing to air support in the Living Lands.

Abilities & Upgrades:

  • Essence Explosion: Explosive arcane damage (upgradeable to increased blast radius, fire accumulation, reduced cooldown).
  • Minoletta’s Missile Battery: Volley of homing missiles (upgradeable to increased fire rate, range, shock accumulation).
  • Arduos Delay of Motion: Slows enemies (upgradeable to intensified slowing, area-of-effect, frost accumulation).
  • Blast: Area-of-effect burst damage on hit (upgradeable to explosive damage for breaking blocks, destroying walls, shattering frozen enemies, increased stun, status effect chance).

Yatzli's potent abilities perfectly complement her fierce personality. She also clears obstacles, granting access to new areas. Although recruited last, she's an invaluable asset for the remainder of your Avowed journey.

Avowed launches on PC and Xbox on February 18.
