Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting
Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 has seen an explosive surge in mod adoption following the release of Patch 7. The community's enthusiasm is undeniable, with an overwhelming number of players embracing the expanded modding capabilities.
Larian CEO Swen Vincke confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of Patch 7's September 5th launch. This figure was quickly surpassed, with mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reporting over three million installs and counting. This incredible uptake highlights the significant impact of the newly integrated mod manager.
Patch 7 itself introduced substantial new content, including sinister new endings, enhanced split-screen functionality, and the highly anticipated built-in Mod Manager. This streamlined tool allows players to seamlessly browse, install, and manage mods directly within the game.
The existing modding tools, accessible via Steam, empower modders to craft their own narratives using Larian's Osiris scripting language. Modders can also incorporate custom scripts, perform basic debugging, and publish directly from the toolkit.
Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon
PC Gamer reported on a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked," expanding editing capabilities beyond Larian's initial restrictions. While Larian had previously expressed reservations about providing full access to development tools, the community's ingenuity has pushed the boundaries.
Larian is actively developing cross-platform modding support, a complex undertaking requiring compatibility across PC and consoles. Vincke confirmed that PC support will be prioritized, followed by console support after addressing potential issues.
Beyond modding, Patch 7 delivers a refined gaming experience with UI enhancements, fresh animations, expanded dialogue options, bug fixes, and performance improvements. Future updates from Larian are expected, promising further developments in cross-platform modding and other exciting features.
