Mortal Kombat 1's development chief, Ed Boon, recently used social media to offer fans a sneak peek at the T-1000 Terminator's Fatality and hinted at "future DLC." This reveal coincides with the release of guest character Conan the Barbarian, which Boon announced has helped the game surpass five million copies sold, up from the previously reported four million.
In a tweet, Boon shared a brief video showcasing the T-1000's Fatality, which is sure to excite fans of Terminator 2. The Fatality features the T-1000 driving a smashed-up truck into his opponent, reminiscent of the iconic chase scene from the film where the T-1000 pursues Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator and Edward Furlong's John Connor.

Boon's comment, "With Conan getting into player’s hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!" has sparked speculation among the Mortal Kombat community. While it could refer to the upcoming release of the T-1000, some fans are hopeful it hints at additional DLC characters beyond the current set.
The T-1000 Terminator is the final character to be added to Mortal Kombat 1 as part of the Khaos Reigns expansion, joining Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Speculation has been rife about whether NetherRealm will introduce a third set of DLC characters or a Kombat Pack 3, especially in light of the game's sales success.
Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company, continues to show strong support for the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav stated that the company plans to focus on just four titles, one of which is Mortal Kombat.
In September, Boon reassured fans that NetherRealm had chosen its next game three years earlier but committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 "for a long time to come." While many expect the next title to be a third installment in the Injustice series, neither NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this. The Injustice series began with Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013, followed by Injustice 2 in 2017. Instead of alternating between the two franchises as initially expected, NetherRealm released Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019 and then the soft reboot, Mortal Kombat 1, in 2023.
In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Boon discussed the decision to release another Mortal Kombat game instead of an Injustice title. He cited the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the switch to a newer version of the Unreal game engine (from Unreal Engine 3 used in Mortal Kombat 11 to Unreal Engine 4 for Mortal Kombat 1) as key factors. "We really wanted to be careful with COVID and all that stuff and everybody staying safe," Boon explained, adding that the team hoped to return to the Injustice series in the future.
When asked directly if the door was closed on the Injustice franchise, Boon responded firmly, "Not at all."
