Sanderson Praises Wheel of Time S3, Fans Demand Season 4

The cancellation of Amazon Prime Video's The Wheel of Time after Season 3 appears to be final, with a new report stating it isn't being offered to other streaming services. In the wake of the decision, Brandon Sanderson, who completed Robert Jordan's acclaimed book series, expressed pointed criticism toward those managing the adaptation.

Last month's announcement revealed that, following what was described as prolonged discussions, Prime Video opted against a fourth season renewal. While the series reportedly had support from certain executives, the financial realities made a continued run unsustainable.

The show, starring Rosamund Pike, brought Robert Jordan's beloved epic fantasy to the screen. After two initial seasons that drew significant criticism from book purists for its narrative changes, Season 3 was widely considered a creative turnaround, winning back many fans and building strong momentum for the story's future.

However, production costs proved prohibitively high for co-producers Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, the latter also overseeing the massive budget for *The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power*.

As industry publication Deadline explained:

... the Season 3 overall performance was not strong enough compared to the show’s cost for Prime Video to commit to another season and the streamer could not make it work after examining different scenarios and following discussions with lead studio Sony TV, sources said.

Brandon Sanderson's reaction to the cancellation was shared in the comments section of one of his YouTube channel videos.

"I wasn't really involved," he clarified. "Don't know anything more than what is public. They told me they were renegotiating, and thought it would work out. Then I heard nothing for two months. Then learned this from the news like everyone else.

"I do think it's a shame, as while I had my problems with the show, it had a fanbase who deserved better than a cancelation after the best season. I won't miss being largely ignored; they wanted my name on it for legitimacy, but not to involve me in any meaningful way."

While clearly frustrated with how he was sidelined during production, Sanderson also acknowledged the deep disappointment of fans who witnessed the show's steady improvement and were eager to see its story continue.

The new report from TVLine, citing well-placed sources, appears to dash hopes for a revival elsewhere, confirming that no active shopping of the series to other platforms is occurring.

This news comes as dedicated fans rally support. An online petition titled "Save The Wheel of Time" has amassed over 120,000 signatures, calling on decision-makers to "Finish the story. It deserves to be told in full!"

These appeals, however, are likely to fall on deaf ears. Some hold out hope that Apple TV+, known for its high-budget sci-fi and fantasy projects, might acquire the series, but given its already-packed development slate, such a scenario seems a long shot.

It appears this ambitious adaptation of one of fantasy literature's greatest works has finally run out of time, concluding another challenging attempt to translate its beloved world to television.
