Destiny 2's Year of Prophecy: Key Details for Guardians

May 19,2025 Author: Blake

Get ready, Guardians! Bungie has just pulled back the curtain on what's in store for their sci-fi masterpiece, Destiny 2. The upcoming content, labeled as the "Year of Prophecy," promises a thrilling lineup of two new expansions and significant seasonal and core game updates, catering to both paying and free players alike.

The "Year of Prophecy" marks a first for Destiny 2, featuring four major content releases, with two of them being paid expansions and the other two being free updates accessible to all players.

Kicking things off is the Rite of the Nine, a free update that introduces a fresh twist on dungeon diving. Available now, it invites both seasoned and novice players to explore familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep, with unique challenges and the chance to reconnect with Orin alongside refreshed dungeon weapons.

Mark your calendars for July 15, when the new expansion, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, launches. This multiyear saga will introduce players to the enigmatic Nine, beings predating the Traveler. Meet new ally Lodi and the Warlock Vanguard, Ikora, as they take center stage. The expansion unfolds on Kepler, a new destination designed with puzzle-solving and exploration at its core, featuring new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.

Simultaneously, on July 15, Destiny 2 will see major core game innovations. Expect revised armor and gear systems to enhance buildcrafting, and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. This update will offer players the ability to choose between various Ops activities tailored to different play styles and objectives, with 50 new modifiers for deeper gameplay customization.

As with any new expansion, pre-order bonuses are enticing. Here’s a breakdown of what you can get:

The excitement continues with the Ash & Iron update on September 9, followed by the Renegades expansion on December 2. Finally, the Shadow & Order update rolls out on March 3.

Destiny 2: Renegades, the second expansion, draws inspiration from the "legendary Star Wars universe," blending Destiny’s unique storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements.

This news arrives as a beacon of hope for many Destiny 2 players following the layoffs of 220 staff members in July 2024, which came less than a year after another 100 layoffs at Bungie.

Meanwhile, Bungie is also working on the much-anticipated reboot of the classic Bungie franchise, Marathon, revealed in May 2023. A recent hands-on preview from IGN suggests it's poised to satisfy the long-standing demand for a robust Bungie PvP experience, with a release planned for September on PC and consoles.
