TouchArcade Rating:
Mobile premium game updates usually improve optimization or compatibility. However, Capcom's recent update for Resident Evil 7 biohazard (Free), Resident Evil 4 Remake (Free), and Resident Evil Village (Free) on iOS and iPadOS introduces an unwelcome change: online DRM. This DRM checks purchase history upon game launch, verifying ownership of the game and any DLC before accessing the title screen. Rejecting the check closes the application. While this takes only a few seconds with an internet connection, it completely removes the ability to play offline. This is a significant drawback, making previously offline-playable titles now reliant on a persistent internet connection.
Pre-update testing confirmed offline playability. This update mandates online verification on every launch. While some players may not be bothered, this forced online DRM for already-purchased games is disappointing. Hopefully, Capcom will revise their purchase verification method to a less intrusive system, perhaps implementing checks less frequently. This situation unfortunately impacts the recommendation of Capcom's premium mobile ports.
The games offer free trials. You can download Resident Evil 7 biohazard on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS here. Find Resident Evil 4 Remake on the App Store here, and Resident Evil Village here. Read my reviews here, here, and here.
